i'm a huge fan of cartoons and comic books from all time periods. they are a large influence on my work. here's an amazing animated tribute to the art form from andreas hykade, obviously another big fan. called love & theft (like the bob dylan album), hykade also quotes dylan in the video's info panel, "and i'm still carrying the gift you gave, it's part of me now, it's been cherished and saved, it'll be with me unto the grave and then unto eternity."

my friend satsiri turned me on to a blog by knitter/comedian franklin habit. in a recent post, franklin described a project he's working on using a late victorian porcelain shoulder head doll. i immediately fell in love with ethel. she has the same penchant i do for gold overglaze luster. she also possesses a dark sense of humor as illustrated in the tableaus above, "impressions of famous women." i'm repeating what franklin said in the original post, "don't blame me. ethel's politics are her own business."

south texas college’s art department, together with the stc library art gallery program, is presenting “a south texas ceramic showdown: up and down and all around.” featuring the fourth annual ceramics exhibition and conference, the event includes a full display of ceramic works by art students and professors from 11 regional universities and community colleges. the exhibit will be on view from july 8 to september 4, 2010. as part of the event, a free, two-day workshop with claybud max butler of butler pottery and carl block of flatland pottery begins friday, july 16 and ends saturday, july 17 at stc’s pecan campus art building ceramics lab. both ceramicists are graduates of the university of north texas, currently teach at texas isd schools, own clay studios, and are active musicians. more info here.

i've been gone a while. lots of things are going on. finally caught up with custom orders. will be part of an april show at austin-bergstrom international airport. and (the thing that's taken up most of my time), i'm opening a store! an actual brick and mortar store in downtown bastrop, texas. there are six artists involved in the co-op, so far, and everyone works in more than one medium, so work from the core group should be pretty interesting. we're also bringing in other artists who will show on consignment basis. i'll keep you posted on our progress. meanwhile, here are a few things i've been working on. some clay, some mixed media.

bastrop's version of the nationwide event will be held february 27 from 11 am to 2 pm at bastrop high school cafetorium, 1614 chambers st. the city's 7th annual empty bowl project will benefit the bastrop emergency food pantry.

so, come pick out the perfect handcrafted bowl to fill with delicious homemade soup provided by local restaurants, and know that you are helping to fill the pantry shelves of the organization that works to prevent hunger in bastrop county. keep the bowl, designed and crafted by local elementary students, as a memento to remind us of those whose bowls are empty.

i did visit van briggle pottery after all and even went to have a look at the original 1900s building (now part of colorado college.). designed by artus van briggle, the old pottery has wonderfully decorated chimneys, gorgeous arts and crafts era tile, a ceramic sundial, and a couple of quirky gargoyles.

colorado springs...although i'm not visiting the pottery this trip, the city is home to van briggle pottery & tile. established in 1899 by artus van briggle, an american painter of dutch descent, the company has the distinction of being one of the only american art potteries from the period to never go out of business. van briggle is best known for art nouveau style designs and traditional matte glazes.

in addition to ceramics and a full time job, i built and maintain the website for dreamtime animal sanctuary in elgin, texas. The shelter has cats and dogs, of course, but was mainly established for large animals: horses, donkeys, burros, and the new throwaway pet, the pot-bellied pig. last week, an amazing 12-year girl who had visited the sanctuary, gathered up some of her belongings and held a garage sale to benefit dreamtime. amy ended up donating $200 to help feed the animals. you can read her story here.

but i have the loveliest customer in arizona. she's building a new house there; i'm outfitting her kitchen with a set of dinnerware. as she is an artist herself, she gives me loads of freedom in terms of shapes and patterns. so far, we've made several large shallow bowls and a gravy boat, and have plans for a butter dish and a huge soup tureen. this is a cream and sugar set i just finished for her.

heading over to houston on monday to see the famous terracotta army, an enormous group of warrior and horse figures, dating from 210 bce. a form of funerary art buried with emperor qin shi huang, china’s first emperor, their purpose was to help him rule another empire in the afterlife. the group of clay statues was discovered in 1974 in the eastern suburbs of xi'an, shaanxi province by local farmers drilling a water well. the figures vary in height from 6’ to 6’5” according to their role, the tallest being the generals. the figures include warriors, chariots, horses, officials, acrobats, strongmen and musicians. current estimates are that in the three pits containing the terracotta army there were more 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses, the majority of which are still buried in the pits. the exhibit will be at the houston museum of natural science through october 18.

my friend jan invited me to a pit firing next weekend. i've never done one before, but jan says you can get some great effects using dried cow pies in the fuel mix. i promised to pick some up at my sister's since she has cattle. but it's been raining like crazy here, so even the dry ones were wet. here they are on the hood of my car baking in the sun.

is a the theme of a show and sale i'll be involved with at the end of april.

as part of the event, a group of artists are collaborating on a wall hanging made up of individual fabric squares put together like a quilt. some of the the squares will be used directly as a canvas for painting, silk screening or similar techniques, while others will have transparent "pockets" to hold 3d work. this 6"x6" tile is my contribution.

three recent sources of inspiration.

richard horwood's 1790s map of london. "a landmark for its day. horwood intended the plan to show every house, every street, lane and alleyway, every feature, and many gardens in order to serve the needs of the gentlemen landowners, surveyors and public officials of the day. it was to be the first map since 1676 to show every individual property, and it remained the largest scale map of london for decades to come." it took horwood and his team of surveyors more than ten years to complete.

amateur british astronomer alexander jamieson's celestial atlas of 1822.

the voynich manuscript, a mysterious undeciphered illustrated book thought to have been written between 1450 and 1520. The author, script and language still remain unknown. over its recorded existence, the manuscript has been the object of intense study by many professional and amateur cryptographers, including top codebreakers of world war ii fame, all of whom failed to decrypt a single word. the images are as inscrutable as the text.

in elgin, texas is now selling my work! the shop, at 106 n. main, is owned in part by treenmaker nancy lou webster. 'treen' is an old generic name for small handmade functional household objects made of wood. in 2006, the texas commission on the arts awarded nancy lou the distinction of being a texas original artist. the award is limited to individuals who exhibit excellence in art through work that is unique to the state of texas. less than fifty texans have received the distinction. i'm honored and excited to be in such good company.

i try to recycle my broken ceramics into jewelry or mosaics, but have fallen way behind with several large boxes and a trash can now full of shards. i only wish this guy lived in my neighborhood.

thirty-six years ago, nek chand, a transport official in chandigarh, india, began to clear a little patch of jungle to make himself a small garden. he set stones around the little clearing and sculpted a few figures from recyclable materials he found and carted home on his bicycle.

chand worked at night, in total secrecy for fear of being discovered by the authorities because he did not own the land where his creation was growing. The once-tiny garden soon covered several acres filled with hundreds of sculptures in a series of interlinking courtyards.

when chand's garden was dicovered, local government officials decided not to demolish the work, instead giving chand a salary and a team of fifty laborers so he could concentrate full-time on the site. now more than twenty five acres of several thousand sculptures set in large mosaic courtyards linked by walled paths and deep gorges punctuated by waterfalls, the rock garden of chandigarh hosts 5,000 visitors a day.

on june 14th, i'll be showing at the elgin (texas) art walk in the historic owen bogart building. hours are from noon to nine. there will be loads of artists and artisans displaying their work in shops and galleries thoughout town, and musicians at either end of main street.

ayumi horie is a fantastic potter working in new york's hudson valley. in addition to her whimsical animal-inspired ceramics, she's now selling two great t-shirts for the clay-inclined.

'brennofenkatastrophenangst' translates roughly as "the fear and anxiety one feels when something goes horribly wrong in the kiln, yet the results are unclear and one has to wait and wonder through sleepless nights, many hours or days, for the kiln to be cool enough to open."
